Valentines Day is on February 14th, when lovers show their love by giving each other a special gift. Nowadays, this is usually expressed by sending a card, giving chocolates, flowers or sharing a romantic dinner.

Traditionally speaking, love notes were exchanged. These days, commercial greeting cards are sent which are often anonymous.

About one billion of these cards are sent each year around the world, and 85% are sent by women.

History

The name of the day comes from several Christian matyrs who share the name.

The tradition originates from the Middle Ages when courtly love was in fashion, notably in the circles of Geoffrey Chaucer.

The first romantic words associated with the day come from a poem written by Chaucer in 1382:

"For this was on seynt Volantynys day

Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make (mate)"
